Houses built before the 1960's used underground storage tanks to store fuel which is used for heating purposes. In spite of the transformation to gas and electricity a lot of these USTs though decommissioned are still in the ground. Most of them still contain fuel and are therefore considered fire and environmental hazards. In Vancouver, Fire Bylaw 8191 requires homeowners to remove USTs if they are no longer in use for the last two years.
When used by skilled technicians GPR can accurately identify the configuration, location and depth of underground tanks, whether the tank is located in open ground or under a concrete slab. Metal detection techniques are always affected by steel reinforcement in the concrete slab and are therefore not an accurate tool for this purpose.
